Swedish Aircraft Giant - The Gripen E is an affordable and affordable fighter, but manufacturer Saab is struggling to find customers.

Saab has unveiled the latest version of its high-tech Gripen fighter jet. But even if it's on par with its rivals, or even better in many ways, the new E will have to overcome serious political and economic hurdles to win sales.

On May 18, the Swedish defense contractor unveiled the updated jet at a press conference at its Linköping plant. The company said it has contracts for about 100 aircraft with the Swedish and Brazilian air forces.

"Let me be clear about what Saab is announcing here today," Ulf Nilsson, the company's head of aeronautics, announced triumphantly at the start of his remarks. "We are changing the way the Air Force thinks, flies and fights for decades to come."

Gripen E's impact will be felt for centuries, Nilsson detailed Saab's improvements to the nearly 30-year-old model. Compared to its predecessors, the Gripen E is faster, can fly farther, carries more fuel and weapons, and is loaded with advanced equipment.

Powered by the American-made General Electric F414G engine, the fighter can cruise at twice the speed of sound for extended periods of time. Almost 50 feet long, it can fly as high as 52,000 feet if needed. With a small forward-mounted canard wing and advanced flight computers, the Gripen is highly maneuverable in hand-to-hand combat and to avoid ground-launched anti-aircraft missiles.

The aircraft's powerful Italian ES-05 Raven radar is an active, electronically scanned type. Unlike older sensors, the Raven has dozens of tiny antennas that can quickly find and track multiple targets at once.

Sweden Unveils Its Newest High Tech Jet Dogfighter

To help combat stealthy enemies, the Gripen E has thermal sensors. A long-range camera can pick up stealthy aircraft hotspots that might be hard to find on a radar screen. Under the right conditions, the device can detect aircraft, helicopters, warships and vehicles on the ground.

The new planes have advanced electronic countermeasures to prevent enemy aircraft and surface-to-air missiles.

Described as an "intelligent fighter", high-tech radio and data links transmit critical information to the cockpit. Like smartphone apps, Saab says the software and hardware can be quickly customized to meet a user's specific needs.

Pilots can choose from an array of weapons loaded into 10 wing and fuselage rigid points after finding them through the onboard system. Saab is touting its ability to customize the Gripen E for a variety of missiles, bombs, targeting and reconnaissance pods and other payloads from around the world.

Chinese Aircraft Enter Taiwan's Air Defence Zone For Second Day

The Gripen, shown on stage at a press conference in May, carried long- and short-range air-to-air missiles, including five MBDA missiles. European manufacturer Saab is using the jet as a key testbed for the weapon, which it says can fly four times the speed of sound and hit targets up to 290 miles away.

For ground targets, the Saab was shown carrying eight small-diameter GPS-guided bombs. Inside the plane is a German 27 mm gun.

"In this business, we hear a lot of rhetoric about small steps or no progress at all," Nilsson said at the start of his presentation. Lockheed's joint F-35 fighter jet. "This [Gripen E] is the only fighter program that is on time and on budget," he added.

With these specifications, the Gripen E is an alternative to Western models such as the latest versions of the US F-16 and F-18, the French Rafale and the Anglo-German-Italian Eurofighter. It's a lot cheaper than Lockheed's F-35, it's a lot of fun to fly, and most importantly, it's usable.

Structural Fears Prompt Move To Ground Australian Made Planes.

According to Saab, the fighter is a realistic opponent to modern models such as the Russian Su-27 family and the Chinese J-11 clone. Nilsson said decades of facing "one of the most advanced adversaries," a clear reference to the Kremlin's military, is reflected in the Gripen E's overall design.

Unfortunately, Nilsson's confidence cannot overcome the very real and significant hurdles the Gripen E will face in the open market. And after building more than half a century of fighter jets, Saab is well aware of these issues.

In the 1960s, the Swedish firm had moderate success selling its Draken fighter jets to Austria, Denmark and Finland. In the 1970s, Saab found no takers for its new Viggen. All Draken operators eventually replaced the aircraft with F-16s and F-18s.

Swedish Aircraft Giant

Since its first flight in 1988, the Gripen has competed with a wide variety of similar aircraft. The Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Thailand have chosen Gripens for their air forces. But Saab was unable to sign as many contracts.

Electric Flight Is Coming, But The Batteries Aren't Ready

The Swedish company had planned to partner with local industrial giant Tata Group, but India opted for the French Rafale in 2011 over the Gripen.

In each of these cases, Gripen's biggest problem isn't about the aircraft's capabilities, or even its price. The main issues are related

In most cases, this requires countries to sign any final agreement. Not only that, but the US-made engine is at the heart of the Gripen's design. The United States has historically been reluctant to effectively help foreign companies compete with American defense contractors.

While Saab designed the aircraft to easily replace radars, radios and other equipment, the company has few options when it comes to engines. European turbine makers, already benefiting from rival fighter jet sales, are unlikely to rush to offer their services.

Saab Gripen E: Dark Horse

In addition, the United States, Russia, and China often offer their friends large military aid packages that benefit local companies. Even with all the Swedish government duties behind it, Saab will have trouble getting anything

Despite Nilsson's F-35 strike force, about 10 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia are planning to buy the American stealth fighter.

Influenza. Canada plans to reconsider its decision to buy the F-35, but Ottawa has said it will consider the joint strike fighter.

Swedish Aircraft Giant

Concerned that the stealth aircraft upset the balance of power in certain regions, the Pentagon was more than happy to try to get other countries to buy the upgraded F-15, F-16, and F-18. Moscow, Beijing and various European countries are pushing their products in unison.

Defence Department Gets Approval To Spend $7b On 16 F 35s: Sources

There is one customer to buy the latest Gripen - Brazil. Brazil plans to buy about 30 Gripen Es, along with about 10 similar two-seat Gripen Fs. "[It's] an important event in the history of both countries." Brig Gen. Nivaldo Luis Rosato, a top Brazilian air force officer invited by Saab to speak at the press conference, said through an interpreter.

Rosato declined to mention the country's sharp political turmoil. On May 12, Brazilian senators began impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff and voted to appoint Vice President Michel Temer to lead until the trial. Brazilian authorities are also investigating his predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on corruption charges.

It's unclear what this means for Gripen E flagship sales. Whatever happens, Brazilian pilots don't expect to receive the fighter until 2019.

Elsewhere, the Swedish firm continues to struggle to break into major markets. In 2015, after India canceled its French Rafales contract, Saab offered New Delhi another partnership to try to renegotiate the deal.

Sweden Strives For Fossil Free Flying With Electric Commercial Plane

Indian officials, struggling to launch their home-grown fighter jets, are undecided on whether to buy the Swedish aircraft. The Pentagon plans to increase cooperation with South Asia's largest democracy, including co-production of the C-130 transport aircraft, which could change plans.

"With the Gripen, you get a lot more," emphasizes Nilsson. “Cooperation in industry has always been part of Saab's strategy. We don't see it as a threat.

Unfortunately for Saab and its well-designed fighter jets, other companies in the high-tech military combat aircraft market, incl

Combat Vest System 12 (Stridsvästsystem 12 or SVS 12) was developed in cooperation with the Swedish forces in Afghanistan by Snigel Design, whose name is popular among users of LE / Security modular gear.

The unique feature of this system is its modularity, which not only covers the bag but also the clothing itself: it can be adjusted like a normal luggage belt with a belt, cut from the back if you are carrying a large or small bag size. and enclosed in a simple Rigi Chest.

The jacket and straps are available in two sizes: Size 1 for fighters 170 cm / 65 kg and Size 2 for everyone else. Thanks to some great adjustments, size 1 is best from XS to M, while size 2 is perfect for petites and up.

This is where you start to feel like Christmas. The difference is that many bags do not match the underwear at the same time. However, you have an easy way to build a belt to meet mission requirements.

The attachment system is a Snigel Design variation of the PALS system, compatible with the MOLLE platform you have. All bags (except the tool bag) have a mesh cover on the water pocket to reduce spillage.

The size of the bag is good. Good storage/storage bag. I don't like cuffs, the cuffs are uncomfortable and tight, and the dress itself is stiff. The stitching is not good. I thought it was just NIR but it's kind of slippery in the range seen in the product photo. I don't have a printed shirt to compare it to, so I don't know how to sew it. I have read that Swedish soldiers say that the bag lights up like a Christmas tree with NVGs, I can not confirm this but I will not buy this for any real purpose, only for airsoft, unless you want to sleep all night during the next war. However, they have been tested and are good to go. Fidget

Now, that's scary. The gray color may be different from the ranger green, but it doesn't matter if you don't look too hard. I was impressed with how much room was left after packing and how well it was organized and the storage bag was a big plus here.

Good jobs can't be found anywhere. Buying a commercial MOLLE belt with all the pockets from a brand like Warrior Assault Systems for example, will cost more than the price of this plane. As mentioned in the previous review, the coating is not well done in place, and it looks like they were made in a factory, which is the only downside.

Swedish Military Double Layered Wool Scarf

Underwear is very expensive. A wide selection and variety of bags, including modular wardrobes and backpacks made by what I believe is a European manufacturer with what is believed to be 100% NIR material / very good dye at this price. I found another listing of the sale of (the same set) on a Swedish website where the Swedish government is listed paying 8000 SEK for this plane which is about $832 USD/755 He said the plane was rejected for sewing and from what I have seen, it looks like the stitching on the molle / strap attachment PAL in some pockets is quite poor when the jacket is not a problem. I can understand why the Swedish army is willing to do this if they pay 755EUR for the plane, but the poor stitching of the bag does not affect the performance of the jacket and the bag. As far as the jacket is concerned, although the inner mesh liner is a thicker material, the jacket has many additional attachment points in the form of elastic on the shoulder straps, internal pockets and local PAL / molle. The belt attached to the vest is not easy to replace and the quality is better, I thought it would be better. Fortunately, one can use another belt in its place if desired. Despite the modularity of the dress, it can take some time to understand how to fix it or how to remove / add parts to turn it into a box, dress and more because it is not easy. Another issue I have is the ability to adjust the chest. I am 184cm 84kgs 39 - 40 inch chest, 34 inch waist small Shoulder length and I can not see.

Sweden Military Strength - This article is part of the Transatlantic Security Initiative's Stronger with Allies series, charting the way forward for the alliance in the context of the 2022 NATO summit.

Sweden's announcement this week that it, along with Finland, will move forward with plans to join NATO has prompted a dramatic shift in public opinion from a committed neutral nation to a potential member of the alliance. But more important from NATO's point of view is the fact that Sweden's unique geopolitical characteristics and its small but advanced military are likely to make it a serious provider of security – not just a consumer of security – in the heart of northern Europe.

Sweden Military Strength

Sweden Military Strength

The Swedes have been parrying Russian aggression for centuries, on land and at sea. Long a formidable power in the Baltic region, Sweden fought several wars against Russia for regional hegemony from the late 15th century to the early 19th century. The last of these occurred just over two hundred years ago and resulted in Sweden ceding much of what is now Finland to Russia; since then, Sweden has ostensibly been neutral or, as the Swedes prefer, non-aligned. But Sweden's rivalry with Russia for security and stability in the Baltic Sea area continued unabated, even during the Cold War.

Sweden Getting Into The Nato Groove By Aiding Ukraine, Boosting Budget

Historically, Swedish efforts to solve its security challenges with alliance systems, whether they consist of states inside or outside the Baltic Sea area, have not been perceived as successful. This led to heavily armed neutrality as the best way to safeguard Swedish sovereignty, imbuing its strategic culture with the notion of defense and deterrence by force. For most of the twenty-five or so years following the Cold War, the absence of a serious Russian threat caused Sweden to drastically reduce its defenses and expand its strategic horizons beyond the Baltic Sea.

But since Russia re-emerged as a major security threat in the region over the past decade or so, Sweden has undergone a paradigm shift, with the Baltic Sea and the Arctic becoming central focal points for security issues. defense and security. As a member of the alliance, Sweden is likely to bring this emphasis to NATO halls and lend its voice to those who believe the alliance must first address the Russian threat in these two strategically important regions.

In terms of capabilities, Sweden also has major strengths, although like most European countries it ended conscription, reduced its military forces and reduced its defense budget after the end of the Cold War. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Sweden had an active force consisting of only one army brigade; but his reserve forces were massive, numbering some 850,000. By the late 2000s, however, the reserve force had dwindled to 200,000 and capabilities across all services had declined significantly.

Beginning in the early 2010s, Sweden (like many European countries) began to build up its military as the Russian threat returned. But regaining a firmer defensive position hasn't been easy: it only resumed conscription in 2018 after an eight-year hiatus, resulting today in a reserve force of just 10,000. Furthermore, the active strength is just 14,600 that the army Swedish is struggling to compete with the private sector in personnel matters.

Nato's Eastern Front: Will The Military Build Up Make Europe Safer?

But despite its size, Sweden has a relatively large set of advanced capabilities, supported by its large and sophisticated defense industry. On the ground, this includes armored, mechanized, airborne, artillery, chemical/biological/nuclear defense, engineer, and air defense units (including Patriot). Its inventory includes 120 German-built Leopard 2A tanks, believed to be the best tanks in Europe and one of the best in the world. Sweden also produces its own infantry fighting vehicles, including the CV90 (which itself is considered one of the best vehicles of its type in the world).

The Swedish Air Force comprises nearly a hundred multi-role (and Swedish-built) JAS 39 Gripen jets, which are characterized by low maintenance requirements and short take-off and landing capabilities. It also has a limited aerial refueling capability and a squadron of five C-130 transport aircraft. In practical terms, this means that although smaller than its Italian or French counterparts, Sweden's air force is considered one of the most powerful in Europe and the world.

Although the smallest of the three services, the Swedish Navy operates the domestically built Gotland diesel-electric submarine, one of the most advanced submarines in the world and the first non-nuclear submarine to have an air-independent propulsion system. This extends its underwater endurance from a few days to weeks.

Sweden Military Strength

Finally, Sweden is one of the few European countries that operates an offensive cyber capability. The Swedish Armed Forces Cyber Defense Department aims to significantly develop Swedish cyber capabilities up to 2025. If recent exercises are any indicator, Swedish cyber capabilities are already among the most advanced in Europe.

The Baltic Region's Security Gap: Understanding Why U.s. Swedish Military Cooperation Is Key

Financially, Sweden has steadily increased its defense budget in recent years in an effort to improve capability, rebuild capability, and increase readiness. The pace picked up sharply in 2020, as Parliament approved a 40 percent increase to the defense budget, which is now expected to rise from $7.2 billion in 2022 to $11 billion in 2025, the largest increase in seventy years. While that would mean Sweden spends even less than NATO's target of 2 percent of gross domestic product, Sweden's centre-left government recently announced it intends to immediately increase defense spending by $318 million this year to reach that target. target of 2% as soon as possible. like 2028.

Today, Russia's brutal second invasion of Ukraine has led even more Swedes to conclude that NATO membership is necessary: around half are in favor of joining the alliance, up from 36% in 2013, while only 22% oppose. And if Finland joins, the percentage of Swedes who prefer membership rises to almost 60%.

This turnaround in Swedish perceptions is remarkable – and all the result of the Kremlin's shocking aggression. If NATO allies ratify Sweden's probable membership application, Stockholm looks set to make an immediate positive contribution to the alliance's security. This contribution looks set to grow as Sweden devotes ever-increasing resources and attention to countering the Russian threat in the Baltic Sea, the Arctic and across Eastern Europe.

Now is not the time to argue for its own sake: the United States and Europe will be safer with Finland and Sweden in the Alliance.

Nato Prepares To Add Sweden And Finland As Members

Both have done a forward-thinking and thoughtful job of making a potential partner-to-member transition so easy.

Our nuclear experts have weighed up Putin's chances of taking the fateful step, how he might do it, and how the West is likely to react.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to Sweden as a neutral country, which is different from its policy of non-alignment with NATO.

COLOGNE, Germany — Sweden's pursuit of a significant military boost is part of the government's calculation to stay out of NATO and instead seek other avenues for defense cooperation, the country's defense minister said this week.

“I don't think it's so easy to say that the solution to all defense problems in our part of Europe is solved only by NATO membership,” Peter Hultqvist told reporters at an online news conference on April 7.

Sweden joining the alliance would "change the situation" for non-aligned neighbor Finland, a key defense partner for Stockholm, he said. "And Finland has a very long border with Russia."

Forward Defense: Has Nato Finally Gotten The Memo?

Fortress Sweden: As part of the plan to mobilize Swedish society against Russia, Sweden prepares to pit the entire country against an invading force and hold out for three months until help arrives.

Hultqvist added that Sweden's security doctrine, derived from "history and experience," would not lend itself to formal NATO membership, although the country, like Finland, is part of the alliance's Extended Opportunities Programme, which it offers some partners a closer bond.

"We think the best thing we can do is to upgrade military capabilities and work with each other from a bilateral and multilateral perspective and build true interoperability, but not change anything in the platform for security in our part of Europe," he added. .

Sweden Military Strength

NATO membership is a controversial topic in Sweden. Politico reported in December that a majority of parties in parliament now support possible membership of the alliance over the stated goal of the minority government in which Hultqvist sits.

Belgium To Inject Another Billion Euros Into Its Army

A general push for the Swedish military, approved by parliament late last year, calls for a 40% increase in spending between 2021 and 2025, to $11 billion.

The plan includes increasing the size of military personnel from 60,000 to nearly 100,000 by 2030, reorganizing the army into three mechanized brigades, upgrading naval corvettes with air defense

Several Vig variants were produced for use as a fighter (AJ 37), aerial reconnaissance (SF 37), maritime patrol aircraft (SH 37) and two-seat trainer (Sk 37). The JA 37 variant of the all-weather fighter-interceptor aircraft was introduced in the late 1970s. in 2005 in November Vigg retired from Swedish Air Force service as sole operator and was replaced by the new Saab JAS 39 Grip.

The first meaning refers to åskvig, which is now translated as "thunder". Traditionally, the word means "thunderstones", historical axes found in the ground during the Viking Age ("åsk-vigg" = "thunder"). The Scandinavians of this period believed that these axes were thrown into the ground by the thunderbolt of the god Thor, who hunted the giants with the war hammer Mjolnir.

These axes were believed to have the magical power to ward off lightning (because "lightning never strikes the same place twice"). However, over time the word changed to the Swedish equivalent Glish "thunder", so the name has a general meaning. However, the name Vig "thunderbolt" - since the prefix has lost the åsk and is precisely the Swedish form, should be translated as "bolt" - indicates this meaning.

Another meaning is wigg, the Swedish word for ground duck. This refers to its canard configuration, since "canard" is Fr.

The Vigg was originally designed for the Saab 32 Lans attack role and later as the Saab 35 Drak fighter.

Sweden's Skool Masters

In 1955, when Saab's Drak prototype, then the world's most aerodynamically advanced fighter, made its first flight, the Swedish Air Force formulated several requirements for its next fighter; Due to the specific nature of these requirements, a long development period was expected, with first flight expected no earlier than the middle of the next decade.

1952-1957 with Finnish aircraft designer Arne Lakomaa, the first studies were carried out on what would become the Vigg. More than 100 different wing designs were investigated in these studies, including single and double gin configurations, traditional and double delta wings, and canary wings. Ev VTOL designs with separate elevator units were considered, but were soon deemed unacceptable.

From the beginning, the Vigg was planned as an integrated weapon system that would work together with a new version of Sweden's national electronic air defense system STRIL-60. It has been used as the country's standard platform that can be effectively adapted to perform all tactical mission roles.

Other requirements included supersonic capability at low altitudes, Mach2 performance at high altitudes, and short landings at low angles of attack (so as not to damage improvised runways). The aircraft was also designed from the ground up to be easy to repair and maintain without requiring extensive personnel training.

Made To Take On Russia, Swedish Gripen Fighter Jets Should Go To Ukraine: Report

One of the essential requirements of the proposed aircraft is that it should only operate on short runways of 500 meters; it was part of the Bas 60 air base system introduced by the Swedish Air Force in the late 1950s. Bass 60 revolves around the force of deploying aircraft to military air bases, including operating reserve runways.

The use of partially destroyed runways was another factor that led to the STOL possibility. The Bas 60 was developed into the Bas 90 in the 1970s and 1980s, introducing shorter runways of just 800 meters.

After eliminating such operations, several strict requirements were placed on the design, including low landing speed, ignition, strong acceleration after landing, precise steering on icy surfaces, and high acceleration during flight.

1960 The US National Security Council, chaired by President Eischauer, formulated a security guarantee for Sweden, pledging US military support against a Soviet attack on Sweden. the two countries signed a military technology agreement. In what is known as "Annex 37", Sweden was given access to advanced US aircraft technology that allowed the Vigg to be produced faster and cheaper.

How Swedish Viggen Fighter Jet Caught Sr 71 Blackbird Spy Plane

Research by Nils Bruzelius of the Swedish National Defense College suggests that the reason for the undeclared US aid was to protect the US Polaris submarines stationed off the eastern coast of Sweden against threats from Soviet submarines.

The connection seems questionable due to the time scale, the strike version of the Wigg did not enter service until 1971, and the combat version of the Polaris retired in 1978.

In 1961 in December, the Swedish government approved the creation of the 37th aircraft system, which would eventually become Vigg.

Swedish Aircraft

Until 1962 all elements of the project have been developed or are almost completely developed; This includes the aircraft itself, power plant, power seats, instruments, intelligence systems, ground handling equipment and training equipment such as simulators.

Sweden Starts Process To Buy Saab's Globaleye Aew&c Aircraft

General configuration approval was granted in 1962. in February, and the development agreement was concluded in 1962. in October

According to aviation authors Bill Gunston and Peter Gilchrist, the project was "the largest industrial development project ever undertaken in Sweden".

In 1963 Saab completed the aerodynamic design of the aircraft; the aerodynamic configuration was radical: it combined a small delta wing with a small, high-mounted canard wing equipped with strong fins positioned in front of and slightly above the main wing. this would be considered the best solution to meet the conflicting requirements of STOL performance, supersonic speed, low turbulence sensitivity, and effective lift for subsonic flight.

Canards have become a common feature on fighter jets, notably the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, Saab JAS 39 Grip and IAI Kfir, but mainly for airspeed rather than STOL capabilities.

Saab And Fmv Air To Air Test Trials With Swedish Tanker

Further aerodynamic improvements included the addition of dog-tooth patterns to the main wing at the final stage of wing development, allowing for the removal of flared flaps from the wing. Using the grip reverse made short descents a success.

Saab ran the type with a single large turbofan engine during design. Initially, the British Rolls-Royce Medway engine was chosen for the Wigg engine, which was considered ideal for a supersonic engine with a fully modulated afterburner; However, the de Havilland Tridt de Havilland gin recycling aircraft has been canceled due to scaled-down versions during development.

Instead of the Medway, Saab took a license from the Volvo RM8, a version of the American Pratt & Whitney JT8D engine. The RM8 has been substantially redesigned, with new materials for Mach-2 flight, a Swedish-made afterburner and a fully adjustable nose.

In 1964, the construction of the first aircraft prototype began; in 1967 February 8 the first of the Eutual Sev prototypes flew on schedule.

Swedish Air Force Wants New Training Aircraft By 2023

This first flight, which lasted 43 minutes, was conducted by Saab's chief test pilot Erik Dahlström, who reported that the prototype was easy to control. At the time, aerospace publication Flight International described the flight as "Sweden's spectacular one-way stand among the leaders of the Swedish aviation industry".

Each Sev prototype was assigned different roles, although the first aircraft were intended to support the development of the AJ37 production variant.

In 1967 The Swedish government concluded that the AJ 37 Vigg would be cheaper and superior to the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.

In 1968 in April The Swedish government officially authorized Vigg production, ordering 175 Viggs that year.

Cold War Showdown: The Swedish Ja 37 Viggen Vs The Sr 71 Blackbird

In 1969 in May, Wigg made his first appearance on Paris Airlines outside of Sweden.

After the first AJ 37 Vigg entered service, later Vigg variants were completed in design and production.

In 1972 The Swedish Air Force has introduced the first SK 37, a second stage operational trainer variant for the instructor.

In 1973 May 21 the first prototype of the SF 37 Vigg, a tactical reconnaissance variant, made its first flight with a modified nose to accommodate the millet.

Although other variants replaced production in the 1960s, Saab continued to develop the JA version of the aircraft interceptor. In 1970, the Swedish air shortage was carefully studied and the future JA 37 Vigg was identified. suited the role perfectly.

Swedish Aircraft Carrier - Fortunately, this did not occur in actual combat, but was simulated as part of a war game involving an aircraft carrier task force including multiple anti-submarine escorts against the HSMS

This feat was replicated over and over again over two years of war games, with opposing destroyers and nuclear attack submarines surrendering to stealthy Swedish submarines. Naval analyst Norman Polmar said the

Submarine costing about $100 million, roughly the cost of an F-35 stealth fighter today, that can do that? After all, the US Navy retired its last diesel submarine in 1990.

Diesel submarines of the past were limited by the need to use noisy, air-guzzling engines, which meant they could only stay underwater for a few days before needing to surface. Naturally, a submarine is the most vulnerable and easiest to track when it surfaces, even with a snorkel. Submarines powered by nuclear reactors, on the other hand, do not require large air supplies to operate and can run more quietly for

However, the 200-foot-long Swedish Gotland-class submarine introduced in 1996 was the first to use an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, in this case the Stirling engine. The Stirling engine charges the submarine's seventy-five kilowatt batteries

And her crew for two full years to conduct anti-submarine exercises. The results convinced the US Navy that its submarine sensors were simply no match for stealthy AIP boats.

This was only the first of many AIP-powered submarine designs, some of which had double underwater durability. And Sweden is not the only country that puts them.

China has two types of diesel submarines that use Stirling engines. Fifteen of the earlier Yuan Type 039A class were built in four different variants, with more than twenty more planned or under construction. Beijing also has a Type 032 Qing-class vessel that can stay submerged for thirty days. It is believed to be the largest operational diesel submarine in the world and boasts seven vertical launch system cells capable of firing cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

She is an evolution of his mass-produced Kilo-class submarine. However, sea trials found that the cells provided only half of the expected production and the type was not approved for production. However, in 2013 the Russian Navy announced that it would build two heavily redesigned Ladas, the

Phantom Warships Are Courting Chaos In Conflict Zones

Other manufacturers of AIP diesel submarines include Spain, France, Japan and Germany. These countries in turn sold them to navies around the world, including India, Israel, Pakistan and South Korea. Submarines using AIP systems became larger, more heavily armed and more expensive types, including the German Dolphin-class submarines and the French Scorpene-class submarines.

The US Navy has no plans to deploy diesel submarines again, however, preferring to stick with nuclear submarines that cost several billion dollars. It is tempting to see him as the Pentagon once again chooses a more expensive weapons system over a cheaper alternative. Not this

Diesel submarines are ideal for patrolling near friendly shores. But US submarines off the coast of Asia and Europe have to travel

Miles just to get there, and then stay deployed for months at a time. A diesel submarine could travel that distance, but would then require frequent refueling at sea to complete a long deployment.

? It was sent back to Sweden in a mobile dry dock instead of making the journey under its own power.

While the new AIP-equipped diesel subs can go weeks without going out, it's still not as good as it gets

Unnecessarily. Also, a diesel submarine, with or without AIP, cannot maintain high speed underwater for very long, unlike a nuclear submarine. A diesel submarine will be most effective when ambushing a hostile fleet whose location has already been "tagged" by friendly intelligence assets. However, the slow and sustained underwater speed of AIP-powered diesel submarines makes them less than ideal for pursuing prey in vast expanses of water.

These limitations are no problem for diesel submarines that operate relatively close to friendly bases, defending coastal waters. But while diesel submarines can be efficient while operating close to home, the US Navy generally isn't.

War Games: A Swedish Stealth Submarine Sank A U.s. Aircraft Carrier

However, the fact that you can build or buy three or four diesel submarines worth $500 million to $800 million each for the price of a nuclear submarine gives them an undeniable allure. Proponents argue that the United States could deploy diesel submarines at bases in allied countries, without addressing the political obstacles posed by nuclear submarines. In addition, advanced diesel submarines can serve as an efficient counterattack to the enemy's stealth submarine fleet.

However, the US Navy is more interested in pursuing the development of unmanned drone submarines. Meanwhile, China is working on long-term AIP systems using lithium-ion batteries, and France is developing a new AIP-equipped diesel submarine version of its Barracuda-class nuclear attack submarine.

The advent of cheap, stealthy, and long-range diesel submarines is another factor that puts aircraft carriers and other expensive surface warships at greater risk when operating near defended coasts. Diesel submarines benefiting from the AIP will serve as a lethal and cost-effective means of defending coastal waters, although it is less clear whether they will be able to carve out a role in blue-water naval forces that running away from their home.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan, can carry up to 90 aircraft aboard and boasts multiple radar systems, torpedo counter measures, and even electronic warfare. But a small diesel-powered submarine built for the Swedish Navy "went adrift" and sank her during the 2005 war games.

Iran Says Ready To Respond, But Us Aircraft Carrier No Threat

Notably, the US Navy phased out its diesel submarines in the 1990s in favor of nuclear ones. Although costing only a few hundred million dollars, diesel submarines need air to burn their fuel and often have to float to replenish their air supplies. Even with a snorkel, detecting a diesel submarine is easier as it rises to the surface every few days. On the other hand, nuclear-powered submarines can stay underwater for much longer, surfacing only to replace necessary supplies for their crews. So, it makes sense to switch to nuclear powered submarines to maintain the element of surprise.

However, even as the United States switched to nuclear-powered submarines, Sweden continued to develop its own diesel-powered submarines. The Gotland class features silent Stirling engines that do not require air for their propulsion, allowing them to stay underwater for weeks when needed or switch to diesel power when traveling longer distances.

By charging the submarine's batteries, a navy unit can also conduct stealth operations without noise. Although nuclear-powered submarines have batteries, they need to run a coolant to keep the reactor temperature down, which could be a clue to their location. However, with a Stirling engine at her side, the Swedish submarine was able to carry out quieter operations, which proved fatal to the aircraft carrier, not once or twice but over two years, Business Insider reported.

Contributing to its success were other innovations in the design of the submarine such as sonar-resistant coatings on her hull, radar absorbers on her tower, slow-spinning propellers, sound-deadening buffers on her internal machinery, and 27 electromagnets that oppose in the detection of magnetic anomaly detectors. .

With the ability to turn sharply and computerized steering that allows an operator to control depth and course, the submarine has more maneuverability than other submarines, making it more difficult to spot, following an attack . Following the exercise, the US Navy requested that the submarine be deployed with US forces to enhance their anti-submarine warfare which was then extended to
